Piazza Armerina is a town located in the inland of Sicily, surrounded by pine and eucalyptus forests. The town became world-famous after the discovery of a large and luxury Roman Imperial Age villa, also known as the Villa Romana del Casale, which is located 5 kilometers from the town itself. The magnificence of the mosaics in the villa has made Piazza Armerina one of the foremost archaeological sites in all of Sicily.

In this blog post, we will take a closer look at the history of the villa and some of its most famous mosaics. If you are planning a trip to Sicily or are simply interested in learning more about this fascinating archaeological site, then read on!

The History of The Villa Romana del Casale

The Villa Romana del Casale was built at the end of the 3rd century AD and served as a luxurious hunting lodge for Maximian, an emperor of Rome. However, despite its opulent origins, it is believed that the villa was only used for around 20 years before it was abandoned during the decline of the Roman Empire.

The first person to rediscover the villa was a farmer who bought the land in 1132 AD. Since then, various parts of the villa have been excavated and restored, including the room with one of its most famous mosaics – The Bikini Girls.

The Bikini Girls – Ancient Mosaics Depicting Roman Fashion

One of the most popular mosaics in The Villa Romana del Casale is known as “The Bikini Girls” mosaic, which depicts 10 young women exercising in what appears to be ancient Roman bikinis. This mosaic is significant because it offers a rare glimpse into ancient Roman fashion – specifically swimwear fashion.

Another famous mosaic from The Villa Romana del Casale is known as “The Great Hunt” mosaic. This mosaic depicts a group of men and dogs engaged in a hunting scene. What makes this mosaic so special is that it measures an impressive 28 meters long by 13 meters wide, making it one of the largest mosaics ever discovered.
